The first Monday in August we celebrate the “day of the Merchants´”. This has become a national holiday and the weekend where “all” Icelanders travel, or at least most of us. There are several large festivals and first to mention “Þjóðhátíð í Eyjum”, which translates as national festival in Vestman islands. Several thousands of Icelanders stroll to the islands and spend the weekend together. There are also other big festivals like in Akureyri and few other places. The summer is the time for festivals in Iceland and next weekend is the Gay pride in Reykjavik, the fish festival in Dalvík and in end of August Ljósanótt, “the night of the lights” in Reykjanesbær to mention a few.
